P R O C L A M A T I O N

 

 

WHEREAS, Homer Rice is known in the community of Fort Thomas as a legendary sports champion, coach, and athletic director, a respected leader, character builder and master motivator; and

 

WHEREAS, Rice moved to Fort Thomas in 1942 where he became an all-state quarterback, all conference basketball guard and a track sprint champion at Highlands High School; and

 

WHEREAS, by his senior year he was captain of the football team that was named conference champion, he then left Northern Kentucky to attend Centre College where he excelled as an all-American quarterback; and

 

WHEREAS, as a high school coach, Rice was named the “Winningest football coach in America 1960,” as a college coach, his development of the triple-option attack revolutionized offensive football; and

 

WHEREAS, as Director of Athletics at North Carolina and Georgia Tech, Rice built programs that became models of achievement on and off the field.  He was also athletics director at Rice University before being lured back to his home town as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals; and

 

WHEREAS, Rice is a founding member of the Fort Thomas Junior Football League that will celebrate 80 years of youth football this year; and

 

WHEREAS, on July 3, 2010 Mr. Homer Rice will represent the City of Fort Thomas as our Grand Marshall in the Independence Day Parade.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARY H. BROWN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF FORT THOMAS, CAMPBELL COUNTY, KENTUCKY, DO HEREBY RECOGNIZE:

 

 

HOMER RICE

 

                  

as Grand Marshall of the 2010 City of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Independence Day Parade and call upon all citizens to honor him. In Witness Thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the City to be affixed this 3rd day of July, 2010.
